Advance Care Planning in BC: Respecting Health Care Wishes - Laura Watts
On January 17, 2009, HLABC featured Laura Watts, National Director, Canadian Centre for Elder Law, Vancouver, B.C., who gave a presentation entitled "Advance Care Planning in BC: Respecting Health Care Wishes." The presentation was thoroughly enjoyed by all, and we look forward to hearing from Laura in the future.

North American Opiate Medication Initiative (NAOMI) - Dr. David Marsh
On December 6, 2006, our invited speaker, Dr. David Marsh, shared with us his perspectives on novel interventions for opioid dependence, including the North American Opiate Medication Initiative (NAOMI) trial of prescription heroin and the Supervised Injection Site in Vancouver, and elaborated on current controversies and forthcoming issues regarding the Supervised Injection Site.

Critically Evaluating Research Papers: Essential Skills - Lindsay Glynn
HLABC held a day-long Spring Workshop on Critically Evaluating Research Papers – Essential Skills, presented by Lindsay Glynn of the Health Sciences Library at Memorial University of Newfoundland, on May 20 at Vancouver Public Library, which was extremely well received.
Designing and Leading Successful Workshops - Janice Johnson
A special workshop focused on library instruction for adults was held on October 13, 2006 at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC in Vancouver. Janice Johnson, Facilitator and Instructional Developer, Centre for Teaching and Academic Growth, UBC, facilitated this interactive, participatory all-day event entitled Designing and Leading Successful Workshops. We started by exploring a range of topics related to designing and leading successful workshops, and moved on in the afternoon to sharing our tips, tools, experiences and ideas with each other. The History of Opiophobia in North America - Dr. Romayne Gallagher
Dr. Romayne Gallagher (Head of Division of Residential Care & Physician Operations Leader of Residential Care, Providence Health Care) presented a socio-political examination of the history of opiod prescription in Canda. Using the past literature on the therapeutic use of opioids Dr. Gallagher demonstrated the newer concepts about pain and its management. We saw how the culture and concepts around opioids has swung back and forth over the last 100 years.
Dr. Romayne Gallagher presented a talk on “The history of opiophobia in North America” at our March 2006 general meeting. She has now published related content, “Opium's fall from grace”, in an article in the December 5th, 2006 issue of the Medical Post (v. 42, issue 39, p. 30-). It may be viewed on-line, click here.

The presenter for the Jan 14, 2006, GM was Leonora Crema, Head, Borrower Services & Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, UBC.

Comprehensive Searching for Systematic Reviews : Principles and Practice - Ellen Crumley
The HLABC hosted a seminar entitled Comprehensive Searching for Systematic Reviews : Principles and Practice on May 13th. The session was held May 13, 2005 at the Computer instruction lab of the Koerner Library at UBC. The instructor for the course was Ellen Crumley. Ellen has extensive experience conducting comprehensive searches in health sciences and librarianship and has published several articles about comprehensive searching.
Is all well in the medical literature and those who search it? - Dr. Keith Chambers
Our guest speaker at the Oct. 5, 2004, GM was Dr. Keith Chambers and his topic was: "Is all well in the medical literature and those who search it?"
Dr. Chambers is a clinical epidemiologist interested in the design, support and critical appraisal of clinical research studies. He is a member of the anti-hypertensive working group of the Cochrane collaboration and a member of the provincial Drug Assessment Working group. As well, Dr. Chambers is the director of the clinical trials support unit at the Vancouver General Hospital which supports clinical trials research for the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. He is also the assistant director for the Centre for Clinical Epidemiology and Evaluation. Dr. Chambers served as interim director of research at the Tzu Chi Institute before its demise.
Brave New World of Health Librarians - Dr. Martin V. Pusic
At the March 24, 2004 HLABC quarterly meeting held at the Children's Hospital a presentation was given by Dr. Martin V. Pusic of the UBC Centre for Community Child Health Research. The presentation on clinical librarianship was entitled "Brave New World of Health Librarians". Dr. Pusic spoke of the role of the librarian in hospitals from the view point of a clinician and discussed the proposed Health Learning and Evidence Center at Children's Hospital.

From Test Tube to Bedside - Dr. Alistair Stewart
Guest speaker at the March 13th 2003 meeting, Dr. Alistair Stewart of QLT Inc. Dr. Stewart's talk, entitled "From Test Tube to Bedside," provided a brief description of the drug development process - the basic steps and decision making process required to take a new drug to the market. He based his discussion primarily on anti-cancer agents and drew his illustrations from real examples from QLT.
